AI Interactive Terminal Product Development
OPD Design delivered the AI interactive terminal product development for a trendy toy client. The result is “Badge Bubble” — a portable, lanyard-worn NFC device that uses AI to recognize collectible badge chips and play matching character voices and sound effects. This project took the product from concept to mass production, enabling “one badge, one exclusive interaction” for Gen Z ACG collectors.
Project Background
ACG culture badges sell over 800 million units yearly in China alone. However, these badges only serve as static collectibles with no interactive capability. Gen Z collectors crave immersive IP experiences beyond passive display.
Moreover, low-cost NFC technology is now widely available, yet the market lacks portable interactive devices designed specifically for badge collectors. This gap presented a clear opportunity.
Therefore, OPD Design partnered with the client to develop an AI-powered NFC interactive terminal. The goal was to enable each badge to trigger its own exclusive audio interaction — filling the market need for smart, portable accessories in the trendy toy space.
How Badge Bubble Works
Badge Bubble is a wearable device that attaches to collectible badges via a lanyard clip. When a user taps an NFC-equipped badge, the device identifies the badge’s unique chip ID and triggers a matching AI-generated sound effect — such as a character’s voice line, a signature BGM clip, or a custom audio response.
The process works in three steps:
1. **NFC Detection**: The built-in NFC module reads the badge’s embedded chip within 0.5 seconds.
2. **AI Matching**: The onboard AI algorithm matches the chip ID to the corresponding sound effect from the database.
3. **Audio Output**: A micro speaker plays the matched sound effect instantly.
Additionally, users can update the sound effect library through a companion mobile app via Bluetooth, allowing new IP audio content to be added at any time.

Design Process of Badge Bubble AI Interactive Terminal
We approached this AI interactive terminal product development through four core phases.
Phase 1 — Research and Hardware Design
We began with market research on NFC technology applications and Gen Z collector needs. This clarified the core functions: NFC identification plus AI sound effect matching.
Consequently, we selected the STM32 microcontroller, a low-cost NFC module, and a micro speaker with noise reduction chip. We also determined the shell material (ABS eco-friendly plastic) and target size (diameter ≤ 5cm). Furthermore, we designed the hardware circuit schematics and PCB board layout.
Phase 2 — AI Sound System and Firmware Development
We built an AI sound effect matching algorithm that recognizes NFC chip IDs and maps them to corresponding IP audio content. Moreover, we collaborated with IP partners to collect exclusive sound effects, including character voice lines and BGM clips.
Additionally, we developed the firmware to handle the complete flow — from NFC detection to AI matching to audio output. The system achieves a recognition accuracy rate of ≥ 98% with response time under 0.5 seconds. We also developed a companion mobile app for Bluetooth-based sound effect management.
Phase 3 — Appearance Design and Prototyping
Phase 4 — Iteration and Mass Production
We designed the terminal shell to match trendy toy aesthetics, with optional IP co-branded pattern customization. The lanyard interface structure ensures portability for daily use.
Subsequently, we conducted structural simulation tests for drop resistance and IP54 water/dust protection. We also adjusted the shell curvature to improve grip comfort. Finally, we produced 100 functional prototypes and invited target users to test recognition sensitivity, sound clarity, and appearance satisfaction.
Based on user feedback from 100 prototypes, we completed 2–3 rounds of iterative optimization. Key improvements included enhancing NFC induction distance and adjusting speaker volume.
Once the design was finalized, we selected a mass production factory, completed mold development, and prepared the supply chain. Additionally, we established 100% functional testing for each device as the quality control standard. The product then entered mass production and market launch.
Project Results
The AI interactive terminal product development project delivered a fully functional, mass-producible device that bridges the gap between static collectibles and interactive IP experiences.
Key outcomes include:
– **Recognition performance**: NFC detection within 0.5 seconds with ≥ 98% accuracy
– **Form factor**: Compact lanyard-worn device (diameter ≤ 5cm) with IP54 protection
– **User experience**: “One badge, one exclusive interaction” — each collectible badge triggers its own unique character voice or sound effect
– **Expandability**: Users can update the sound library via the companion mobile app, keeping the experience fresh with new IP content
Based on different IP toys, the device converts character voices and personality traits into immersive audio interactions. This transforms passive badge collecting into an engaging, multi-sensory experience for Gen Z ACG fans.
What is an AI interactive terminal for collectible badges?
An AI interactive terminal is a portable wearable device designed for badge and collectible toy enthusiasts. It uses NFC technology to read the unique chip embedded in each badge, then applies AI to match the chip ID with a corresponding sound effect — such as a character voice line or music clip. The result is an interactive audio experience unique to each badge.
