Smart Comb Product Development
TL;DR: OPD Design developed a smart spray comb combining heating and misting functions for a personal care client. The project covered industrial design, mechanical and hardware engineering, firmware development, functional prototyping and mold development, delivering a production-ready design with integrated temperature control and hair-care technology.
Project Background
As a 15-year biotech leader in scalp care, KimDai identified critical flaws in traditional roller-ball systems through quantitative lab tests and user behavior analysis:
-
30% Active Ingredient Loss: Mechanical friction and oxidation in roller-ball structures.
-
68.6% Absorption Rate: Rigid designs failed to adapt to scalp curvature.
OPD-Design’s medical-grade industrial design framework reimagined these challenges, targeting >90% delivery efficiency while transforming a clinical tool into a luxury self-care device.
This case demonstrates OPD Design’s end-to-end product development capabilities. We transformed a clinical scalp care tool into a luxury consumer device. Our team handled every phase — from technology research through MEMS integration, medical-grade prototyping, and mass production readiness.
Solution
TRIZ-Driven Mechanical Innovation
MEMS Atomization Core: Replaced roller-balls with microelectromechanical systems for 8μm mist precision (vs. 150μm droplets in traditional systems).
Self-Cleaning Mechanism: 20,000rpm titanium blade (Patent ZL2023XXXXXX) prevents clogs in high-viscosity formulas.
Ergonomic Scalp Mapping: 16-point pressure sensors adjust mist density for Asian scalp curvatures.

Our Smart Spray Comb Development Process
Step 1-Product Definition & Market Research
We analyzed the personal care market for smart hair tools, reviewed user feedback on existing spray combs and worked with the client to define target users, heating performance requirements and the misting function integration scope.
Step 2-Industrial Design
We designed an ergonomic comb form integrating a heating plate and misting nozzle within a compact handle housing. The industrial design balances aesthetic appeal with functional requirements for water tank access, button placement and charging port accessibility.
Step 3-Mechanical (Structural) Engineering
We engineered the internal structure to house the water reservoir, heating chamber and misting system within the comb’s slim profile. Material selection focused on heat resistance, user safety and manufacturing feasibility for the compact enclosure.
Step 4-Hardware & Firmware Development
We developed the heating element control circuit, temperature sensor integration and firmware algorithms for precise temperature regulation and misting cycle control. Safety features including auto-shutoff and over-temperature protection were embedded in the firmware.
Step 5-Functional Prototyping
We built functional prototypes and conducted testing for heating uniformity, misting consistency, battery performance and user handling comfort. Feedback from user trials informed iterative refinements to the grip ergonomics and temperature settings.
Step 6-Mold Development
We managed injection mold tooling for the comb housing, water tank and heating chamber enclosure. T0/T1 trials confirmed part quality, surface finish and assembly fit, with particular attention to the sealing interface between the water tank and the main body.
Step 7-Supply Chain & Mass Production Support
We coordinated component sourcing for the heating elements, pump motor and battery cells, managed pilot assembly runs and supported volume production with quality inspection processes across our manufacturing network.
