Sci-Fi Style Electric Ceramic Stove Development

OPD DESIGN | Sci-fi style stove

OPD Design developed a sci-fi style electric ceramic stove for a China-based client, combining a spaceship-inspired exterior with infrared temperature detection and an ambient color-changing light strip. The compact desktop cooktop automatically stops heating at 100°C for safer everyday use.

Project Background

The client wanted a compact desktop electric ceramic stove with a high-tech, futuristic appearance that would stand out in the small kitchen appliance market. OPD Design was asked to create a distinctive visual identity while integrating intelligent temperature control into a small footprint.

Solution

OPD Design gave the stove a minimalist sci-fi character: the raised front section echoes the silhouette of a spaceship, while a temperature-sensitive light strip changes color to show the heating status at a glance. An integrated infrared sensor measures water temperature from 36°C to 100°C, and heating stops automatically once the water reaches 100°C, improving safety for desktop use. The compact body is sized for personal workspaces without sacrificing heating performance.

Our electric ceramic stove Development Process

Product Definition & Market Research

We started by defining the product opportunity with the client: a compact desktop electric ceramic stove aimed at the Chinese small-appliance market, where most products look generic. Our team reviewed competitor cooktops, desktop usage scenarios, and safety expectations for personal workspaces. Based on this, we set the design direction around two differentiators — a distinctive futuristic appearance and visible intelligent temperature feedback.

Industrial Design

The design team developed the sci-fi form language through hand sketches, CMF exploration, and multiple 3D concept directions. The raised front section was shaped to echo a spaceship silhouette, giving the small appliance a strong shelf presence. A temperature-sensitive color-changing light strip was integrated into the facade so users can read the heating status at a glance without a conventional display.

Mechanical (Structural) Engineering

Our engineers converted the approved concept into a manufacturable structure. We designed the internal frame, ceramic heating panel support, raised housing, and mounting positions for the infrared sensor and light strip within a compact desktop footprint. Heat distribution, thermal insulation, and assembly sequence were checked to keep the exterior cool while protecting the internal electronics.

Hardware & Firmware Development

The electronics team developed the control hardware and firmware for intelligent heating. An infrared temperature sensor continuously measures water temperature from 36°C to 100°C, and the firmware drives the color-changing light strip and enforces the safety rule: heating stops automatically once the water reaches 100°C. The controls were tuned for responsive, stable performance in everyday desktop use.

Functional Prototyping

We built working prototypes that combined the real housing, heating panel, sensor, and control board to test the design as a complete product. Prototypes were used to verify heating performance, temperature detection accuracy, auto shut-off behavior, and the light-strip feedback under real conditions. Findings from each round fed back into structural and firmware refinements before tooling.

Mold Development

Once the design was locked, our tooling engineers managed mold design and validation for the plastic and structural parts. We reviewed draft angles, parting lines, gate positions, and cooling to preserve the clean sci-fi surfaces, then ran T0/T1 trials and adjusted the tools until the parts matched the approved finish and assembly tolerances.

Supply Chain & Mass Production Support

We supported the product through to mass production by coordinating component sourcing, supplier selection, and pilot runs in our China manufacturing network. Our team followed up on assembly quality, consistency of the light strip and sensor performance, and production-line testing before volume shipment, helping the client move from validated prototype to a stable retail product.
