OPD Design partnered with US brand OMOVEE to deliver an electric bicycle product development project. The scope covered industrial, mechanical and hardware design, functional prototyping and testing of an urban e-bike featuring a removable charging module, fingerprint authentication, GPS tracking and front/rear lighting system.
Project Background
electric bicycles have become an ideal choice for many consumers due to their convenience and environmental friendliness. Our client OMOVEE keenly sensed market demand and hoped to develop an innovative electric bicycle to meet consumers’ pursuit of convenient travel and personalized functions. This electric bicycle not only needs to have the advantages of traditional electric bicycles but also achieve breakthroughs in portability, charging methods, and safety performance.

Collaboration Model — Full-scope development with OMOVEE remove the charging module for charging, greatly improving the convenience of use. Secondly, to enhance safety performance, we added alarm functions and fingerprint recognition functions. The alarm function can issue an alarm in time when the vehicle encounters abnormal situations, reminding users and surrounding people. The fingerprint recognition function ensures the safety of vehicle use, and only authorized users can start the vehicle.
Solution
To meet OMOVEE’s needs, we proposed a series of innovative solutions. Firstly, for portability, a portable electronic charging module that can be quickly installed and removed was designed. This design allows users to charge the electric bicycle without having to move the entire vehicle to the charging location. They only need to remove the charging module for charging, greatly improving the convenience of use. Secondly, to enhance safety performance, we added alarm functions and fingerprint recognition functions. The alarm function can issue an alarm in time when the vehicle encounters abnormal situations, reminding users and surrounding people. The fingerprint recognition function ensures the safety of vehicle use, and only authorized users can start the vehicle.
Our Electric Bicycle Development Process
We followed OPD Design’s standard product development process, adapted to the structural, electronic and safety requirements of an urban electric bicycle.
Step 1-Product Definition & Market Research
We analyzed urban commuting needs, competitor e-bikes and safety requirements with OMOVEE to define portability, charging and security targets.
Step 2-Industrial Design
We created a clean, urban-styled frame with integrated mounting for the removable charging module, balancing aesthetics, portability and ergonomic riding posture.
Step 3-Mechanical / Structural Engineering
We engineered the frame structure and internal layout to support the charging module, electronic components and front/rear lighting while maintaining ride stability across different road conditions.
Step 4-Hardware & Electronic Design
We designed the electronic system including the removable charging module, fingerprint authentication, GPS tracking, and front light with brake-light rear light integration, ensuring lightweight, reliable and safe operation.
Step 5-Functional Prototyping
We built functional prototypes and tested charging module connection stability, fingerprint unlock accuracy, alarm response and GPS tracking under realistic riding conditions, iterating until targets were met.
Step 6-Design Verification & Compliance Support
We refined the design based on prototype results and supported alignment with applicable e-bike safety and electronics standards for the US market (e.g. UL/CPSC requirements).
Step 7-Manufacturing Support
We supported tooling, pilot production and quality control setup with Shenzhen manufacturers to prepare the e-bike for series production and US market launch.
