Curved Ceramic Cooktop Development

OPD Design developed a curved ceramic cooktop for a China client, covering industrial design, mechanical engineering, electronics, prototyping, and packaging. The one-piece curved tempered glass surface, energy-concentrating ceramic heating plate, and invisible touch controls combine a decorative look with focused heating and easy cleaning.

Project Background

A China client came to OPD Design with a concept for a small electric ceramic cooktop that would look different from the flat, utilitarian products already on the market. The goal was a curved glass appliance with a softer, decorative appearance for modern kitchens, without giving up heating performance or easy cleaning. Our role was to develop the product from the curved glass concept through engineering, electronics, prototyping, packaging, and into mass production.

Solution

OPD Design developed the curved ceramic cooktop around a seamless one-piece tempered glass panel, so the surface has no joints where spills can collect and is quick to wipe clean. Beneath the curved glass, a microcrystalline ceramic heating plate follows the shape of the panel, and an energy-concentrating structure directs heat upward for focused, responsive heating rather than letting it spread sideways. Invisible touch controls are embedded directly into the glass for power adjustment with anti-mistouch logic. The lightweight body rests on a non-slip base for stable use on kitchen counters and tabletops, and the curved exterior is offered in gradient finishes that fit modern home interiors.

Our Curved Ceramic Cooktop Development Process

Step 1-Product Definition & Market Research

We began by defining the product opportunity with the client: a small electric ceramic cooktop for the China market, where most competing products use flat, look-alike glass panels. Our team studied competitor cooktops, user scenarios from kitchen use to tabletop and outdoor cooking, and expectations around safety and cleaning. The research set the direction — a seamless curved surface, focused heating, and a lighter, more decorative appliance.

Step 2-Industrial Design

The design team explored the curved form through sketches, CMF studies, and several 3D concepts, developing the one-piece “floating curve” language with no visible seams or button holes. Invisible touch controls were planned into the glass itself to preserve the clean surface, and gradient finish options were developed to suit modern kitchen interiors. The curvature was tuned both for visual softness and for concentrating heat over the cooking zone.

Step 3-Mechanical (Structural) Engineering

Our engineers converted the curved concept into a manufacturable structure. We designed the frame, the support geometry for the curved tempered glass panel, and the mounting of the microcrystalline ceramic heating plate so it follows the panel curve. Thermal insulation, airflow, spill protection, and assembly sequence were checked to keep the exterior comfortable to touch while protecting the internal electronics, and a non-slip base was engineered for stable tabletop use.

Step 4-Hardware & Firmware Development

The electronics team developed the power control hardware for stable heating across the adjustment range and the capacitive touch circuitry embedded behind the glass. Firmware drives the invisible touch interface, power-level control, and anti-mistouch logic so casual contact with the panel does not change settings. The control board was laid out to fit the curved, lightweight body and to manage heat from the ceramic plate.

Step 5-Functional Prototyping

We built working prototypes using the real curved glass, heating plate, and control board to test the product as a complete system. Prototypes were used to verify heating behavior, the curved glass under repeated thermal cycling, touch responsiveness, base stability, and the wipe-clean surface under real kitchen use. Findings from each round fed back into structural, electronic, and CMF refinements before tooling.

Step 6-Mold Development

Once the design was locked, our tooling engineers managed mold development for the structural and housing parts, with particular attention to the parts that support and seal the curved glass. We reviewed draft angles, parting lines, gate positions, and cooling to protect the smooth seam-free surfaces, then ran T0/T1 trials and adjusted the tools until the parts matched the approved fit, finish, and assembly tolerances.

Step 7-Supply Chain & Mass Production Support

We supported the product through to mass production by coordinating curved-glass and ceramic-plate suppliers, component sourcing, and pilot runs within our China manufacturing network. Our team followed up on assembly quality, consistency of the heating and touch performance, safety testing against the applicable Chinese standards, and production-line checks before volume shipment. Matching retail packaging was delivered as part of the production handover.

Frequently Asked Questions

1.What does curved ceramic cooktop development with OPD Design include?
Industrial design, mechanical engineering, electronic hardware and control development, prototyping, packaging design, and optional mold and mass production support, depending on your project scope.
A ceramic (electric) cooktop heats a microcrystalline plate under the glass that radiates heat upward, while an induction cooktop uses electromagnetic coils that require compatible cookware. This project uses electric ceramic heating.
Yes. Our mechanical and electronics teams work together, so the curved glass structure, heating plate, and touch control board are engineered as one system rather than by separate vendors.

Yes. For products moving to production, we manage tooling, supplier coordination for glass and electronic components, pilot runs, safety testing follow-up, and production quality checks.
