OPD Design developed the brand identity and packaging system for Yanlan, a Wuyishan mountain tea brand. The solution combines eco-friendly paper and wood packaging, standardized aluminum tea bags with series-specific paper labels, and a natural visual identity inspired by the tea-growing landscape — helping the brand stand apart from mass-market commercial tea packaging.

Project Background

Yanlan is a tea brand rooted in the Wuyishan tea-growing region of Fujian, China. The brand’s founders come from a long tea-growing family tradition in the area, and have always prioritized natural farming methods — avoiding synthetic fertilizers and pesticides — to preserve the authentic character of the local mountain tea. The goal was to build a brand identity and packaging system that would tell this story of origin and craftsmanship, differentiating Yanlan from mass-market commercial tea brands whose packaging does little to communicate where the tea comes from or how it is grown.

Solution

OPD Design developed the brand identity and packaging system for Yanlan. We drew textures and colors directly from the mountain tea landscape — earth tones, mineral greens, and natural paper grain — and selected eco-friendly paper and wood materials to reflect the brand’s commitment to the land. The packaging consists of two integrated parts: aluminum tea bags for freshness and an outer box for gifting and retail presentation. We also reorganized the client’s previously disorganized product line, introducing standardized aluminum tea bags paired with paper labels that identify each product series. This standardization reduced packaging costs while preserving a handcrafted feel that sets Yanlan apart on the shelf.

Step 1-Brand & Heritage Research

We worked with the Yanlan founders to understand the brand’s roots in the Wuyishan tea-growing region. Through conversations about family tea-growing traditions and the natural landscape, we identified the core brand story: a commitment to natural farming and the authentic character of mountain-grown tea. This research shaped every visual and packaging decision that followed.

Step 2-Packaging Research & Material Exploration

We studied how premium and artisanal tea brands present themselves in both physical retail and e-commerce. We explored a range of eco-friendly materials — textured papers, natural wood finishes, and food-safe aluminum foil — to find a combination that would protect the tea, communicate the brand’s connection to nature, and remain cost-effective for a small-batch producer.

Step 3-Packaging Structure & Engineering

We engineered the two-part packaging system: an aluminum tea bag for freshness and an outer box for gifting and retail. Structural decisions included tear-open mechanics, resealability for the tea bags, and the box’s protective qualities during shipping. Each series within the Yanlan line received a standardized format so the entire range could share production tooling without losing its individual identity.

Step 4-Branding & Visual Identity

We developed the Yanlan brand identity from scratch: logo, typography, and a visual language drawn from the mountain tea landscape. Earth tones, mineral greens, and natural textures became the foundation. Paper labels were designed to carry series-specific information while maintaining a cohesive look across the full product line.

Step 5-Prototype & Material Testing

We produced packaging prototypes for the full product range and tested them under real-use conditions: moisture resistance of the aluminum bags, durability of the outer box, color accuracy of the paper label printing on different material batches, and how the packaging felt in hand. Findings from each round refined the material choices and printing specifications before final production.

Step 6-Packaging Prototyping & Production Support

We supported the transition from prototype to production by reviewing material sourcing, coordinating with printers and converters, and approving final print proofs. Draft angles, parting lines, and foil application areas were adapted to the two-part paper-and-aluminum system to preserve the handcrafted aesthetic while meeting production requirements.

Step 7-Launch Support

We delivered final packaging files, brand guidelines, and production-ready artwork to the client’s printing and production partners. The standardized packaging system and cohesive brand identity helped Yanlan enter the market with a clear visual presence that differentiated it from mass-market commercial tea brands.
