Household Cleaning Packaging Development

beauty product design
OPD Design developed a minimalist packaging system for a China client’s household cleaning product line, covering bottle shape design, packaging design, branding, and marketing materials. The series uses pure white with silver foil accents across laundry, dish, and fragrance products, engineered for cost-effective molds to maintain competitive pricing on supermarket shelves.

Project Background

A China client came to OPD Design with a self-operated household cleaning product line for major supermarkets and hypermarkets. The range includes laundry detergent, laundry pods, dish soap, bar soap, and fragrance beads. The client needed a cohesive packaging system that would stand out on crowded supermarket shelves while maintaining a premium feel at a competitive price point. Our role was to develop the bottle shapes, packaging design, branding identity, marketing materials, and mold support for the full product line.

Solution

OPD Design developed a minimalist packaging system for the household cleaning product line. Against the bright, saturated colors typical of supermarket cleaning aisles, the series uses pure white as the base to emphasize cleanliness, with silver foil accents adding a premium touch. Custom bottle shapes were designed for each product category to create a cohesive family look, and the packaging was engineered to work with cost-effective molds to support the self-operated brand’s price advantage. The cohesive visual system across all five product categories helped the line achieve strong sales performance on supermarket shelves.

Project Data

Services: Industrial design (bottle shapes), Packaging design, Branding design, Marketing design, Mold development
Client country: China
Product type: Household cleaning packaging system (5 SKUs: laundry detergent, laundry pods, dish soap, bar soap, fragrance beads)
Product stage: Mass produced, strong sales performance
Industries: Consumer goods, household cleaning, retail packaging
Deliverables: Bottle shape design, packaging design, branding identity (logo/VI), marketing materials, mold tooling

Step 1-Brand & Market Researc

We started by researching the supermarket cleaning aisle with the client: most competitors use bright, saturated colors to grab attention, so we identified an opportunity for a minimalist white-based system that would stand out through contrast. We studied the five product categories, shelf placement expectations, and target consumer perceptions, then set the direction around pure white with silver foil accents and cohesive bottle shapes across the line.

Step 2-Industrial Design (Bottle Shapes)

The design team developed custom bottle shapes for each of the five product categories — laundry detergent, laundry pods, dish soap, bar soap, and fragrance beads. Each bottle was shaped to feel appropriate for its use context while maintaining a cohesive family silhouette. Ergonomics, pour control, and shelf footprint were balanced with the minimalist aesthetic.

Step 3-Packaging & Structural Engineering

We engineered the packaging structure for each SKU, selecting materials and formats appropriate to the product (bottles for liquids, pods in sealed pouches, bar soap wrappers, fragrance bead containers). The packaging was designed to work with cost-effective mold tooling without compromising the clean white + silver foil visual identity, keeping production costs aligned with the self-operated brand’s pricing strategy.

Step 4-Branding & Visual Identity

We developed the brand identity including logo, typography, and visual guidelines that would unify all five SKUs under one recognizable system. The silver foil accent became a signature element across the line, and the pure white base communicated cleanliness and simplicity. Marketing materials including shelf talkers, promotional posters, and digital assets were designed to extend the brand language into the retail environment.

Step 5-Prototype & Shelf Testing

We produced packaging prototypes for all five SKUs and tested them in simulated supermarket shelf conditions. Prototypes were evaluated for visual impact against competitor products, color accuracy of the white + silver foil combination, bottle ergonomics, and label legibility at shelf distance. Findings from each round refined the packaging details before final tooling.

Step 6-Mold Development

Our tooling engineers developed molds for the custom bottle shapes and packaging components. We reviewed draft angles, parting lines, gate positions, and surface finish requirements to preserve the clean minimalist surfaces and the silver foil application areas, then ran T0/T1 trials and adjusted the tools until parts met the approved appearance and assembly tolerances.

Step 7-Launch & Marketing Support

We supported the product line through to supermarket launch by coordinating mold production, packaging printing, and initial production runs. Marketing materials were delivered alongside the packaging to support the client’s retail rollout. The cohesive system across all five SKUs helped the line achieve strong sales performance on supermarket shelves.
