Gift Boxes Development

Gift boxes development — opened Qianhai talent welcome gift box showing all three products: city silhouette tap light, mountain-sea bookmarks, and hand-painted aroma sachet

TL;DR: OPD Design developed a government-commissioned welcome gift box for Qianhai, Shenzhen, featuring three custom products: a city silhouette tap light, mountain-sea bookmarks, and a hand-painted aroma sachet. The project covered illustration design, industrial design, packaging design, and production support — from cultural concept to mass production.

Project Background

Gift boxes development — Qianhai brand identity image with city skyline photograph and QIAN HAI typography

Qianhai, a core platform in Shenzhen, was entrusted with building an international talent hub for the city. As global competition for talent intensified, policy incentives and industrial advantages alone were no longer sufficient to bridge the emotional gap with overseas professionals. Many talented individuals’ understanding of Qianhai remained at the abstract concept of a “policy high ground,” lacking cultural identification and a sense of place. OPD Design was commissioned to develop a welcome gift box that would make the Qianhai spirit tangible and memorable. The gift set includes three custom products: a Qianhai city silhouette tap light, a mountain-sea themed bookmark set, and a hand-painted aroma sachet — each designed to balance commemorative value with everyday practicality so the gift becomes more than a disposable decoration.

Solution

OPD Design developed the gift box around the core concept of “visualizing the Qianhai landscape and making its cultural spirit perceptible.” Every design decision — from element selection and illustration style to functional form and material choice — revolved around conveying the characteristics of Qianhai and connecting with global talent. The city silhouette tap light translates Qianhai’s iconic skyline into a functional bedside lamp, the mountain-sea bookmarks draw from classical Chinese landscape imagery reinterpreted for a contemporary audience, and the hand-painted aroma sachet adds a sensory, handcrafted touch. All three products were designed to balance commemorative value and practicality, ensuring the gift box serves as a lasting keepsake rather than a one-time ceremonial item. The packaging itself was engineered to present the three products cohesively while protecting each item during shipping and handling.

Step 1-Cultural & Brand Research

We worked closely with the Qianhai team to understand the cultural narrative they wanted to convey to international talent. Through workshops and reference research, we identified key visual elements from the Qianhai landscape — the skyline, the bay, the mountains — and translated them into a cohesive design language that would feel both locally rooted and internationally accessible.

Step 2-Product Concept & Industrial Design

We developed concepts for each of the three gift items: a tap-activated city silhouette lamp, a bookmark set inspired by classical mountain-sea imagery, and a hand-painted aroma sachet. Each product was designed to balance commemorative symbolism with everyday utility. The tap light required integration of a simple electronic module with the city silhouette form, while the bookmark and sachet focused on material selection and handcrafted finishing.

Step 3-Mechanical & Electronic Integration

For the city silhouette tap light, we engineered the structural housing to accommodate the LED module, tap sensor, and power system within a compact form that preserved the skyline silhouette. We coordinated the electronic component sourcing with the industrial design to ensure the final product met both aesthetic and functional requirements. The bookmark and sachet required structural engineering for durability and material compatibility with the packaging.

Step 4-Cultural Content & Illustration Design

Our illustration team developed the visual language for the entire gift set. The city silhouette was rendered as a clean, recognizable skyline that international audiences could immediately associate with Qianhai. The mountain-sea bookmarks drew from traditional Chinese landscape painting reinterpreted with contemporary illustration techniques. The aroma sachet featured hand-painted botanical motifs that added a personal, artisanal touch to the set.

Step 5-Packaging Structure & Prototyping

We designed the gift box structure to present all three products cohesively while protecting each item during shipping. Custom inserts were engineered to hold the tap light, bookmarks, and sachet securely in place. We produced prototypes of the full set and tested them for structural integrity, material compatibility, and the unboxing experience — refining the layout and finishing until the presentation matched the brand’s intentions.

Step 6-Production & Printing Support

We coordinated with production partners for both the electronic components of the tap light and the printing and finishing of the packaging, bookmarks, and sachet. Print proofs were reviewed for color accuracy of the illustrations, and the hand-painted sachet elements were quality-checked for consistency across the production run. We managed the timeline across multiple production streams to ensure all components arrived ready for final assembly.

Step 7-Delivery & Quality Support

We supported the final assembly, quality inspection, and delivery of the complete gift boxes to the client. Each set was inspected for structural integrity, illustration color accuracy, and electronic function of the tap light before shipment. The project was delivered on schedule for the client’s talent engagement program.
